Not Exciting Does not Equal Boring

Not much has been going on around my neck of the woods, at least not really to write about. Two weekends ago we celebrated the day of Mexican Independence. We got drunk with friends and went to Valle do Bravo. It was cool but I really wasn’t motivated to write about it because it would have been the same old we did this and it was cool, we did that and it was cool, and so on. The same with this weekend, I went out with friends both nights but nothing extremely exciting.

I feel like I sort of got into a groove and the things we did in the last year that were exciting and interesting have turned into the normal every week things. I guess you could compare it to if you had a peep hole into the girl’s locker room which was super exciting (in more than one way) at first but after a while it’s the same thing over and over and eventually becomes somewhat boring. But for some reason you still continue to do it because you are used to it and there isn’t really anything else to do, maybe it’s time to find a different location with new things. OK, maybe a bad example but I just want to show if something isn’t exciting, doesn’t mean boring, but something new couldn’t hurt.

It’s almost like I am not living here to experience new things anymore, I am just here. The things that were once new have lost their interestingness and excitingness (are those words?). For example, it used to be adventurous to take the bus, but I take it every day and it is dirty, stinky, and loud. It used to be fun to go to the supermarket and see the different products they have, now it sucks because they never have the things you want. It used to be fun driving in the crowded streets because it resembled a video game, but I am stuck on the same level and there is no web site to tell you what to do or cheat codes.

I’m not saying that it is boring here because it isn’t. It’s just that it’s not as exciting as it used to be. Let me reintegrate that not exciting does not equal boring.

High School got boring then I moved away to college. College was great, freedom, booze, girls, rugby, then came credit card debt, rent, injuries, ramen noodles every day, steady girlfriend. Then graduation where I got a job and had money to spend, parting like a rock star, but then came routine, work every day, same friends, same bars, longer hangovers, less women, responsibility. So I moved to Mexico and it is becoming routine all over again.

Who knows where I will end up next, getting a teaching certification, back to school for psychology, move to a whole new part of the US, but I’m sure that it will lose its luster and another change will be immanent.

This is not a rant about me not liking it here anymore, just merely speaking my mind. I am happy and it is fun doing the things that I have grown accustomed to with my sister and friends. I will continue to have fun and make the most of my stay here for the next 4-5 months.

Peace out!

Fantasy Football, Christmas, Plans, and Snakes on a Plane

The first week was not a good one for my boys, five teams lost and only one came out victorious, and by only a few points! I was very disappointed and discouraged. I had some meek performances and some hopefulls that didn't pan out. At least I still have a chance for some sucessfull teams. Must keep my morale up!

I just bought my plane ticket home for Christmas, turns out that I will have two and a half weeks off due to the center being closed. Way cool! I was thinking one week tops. I am flying into Chicago on Sunday night the 17th of December and flying back on the 4th of January out of Chicago.

The tickets didn’t really make sense because I would have like to fly into Detroit rather than Chicago but usually it is about $200 more expensive but the flight I found to Chicago changes planes in Detroit. It goes from Mexico City to Detroit, then to Chicago and it was a good price. But when I looked for that same flight just to stay in Detroit it was $200 more! $200 more to not take the second plane to Chicago! I am going to call the airline and see what the deal is. If you just not take the plane to Chicago, your return ticket will be cancelled, because I thought of that already.

I am starting to try and figure out what my plans will be when I come home in February. I think that I am going to get my teacher certification in an accelerated program at Saginaw Valley State University and after that possible look for a teaching job in the Northern Lower or Upper Peninsula and live off the fat of the land. Alpena is one of the places I am thinking about because my family has some property and a hunting cabin I could live at. It may be really boring but that isn’t always bad. My Good friend Inferno and I have also been talking about going to school somewhere in the North West USA (Washington, Oregon), Colorado, or Alaska. That plan is always a possibility but our grand plans usually fall through, but they are fun to talk about.

Oh-yea, I saw Snakes on a Plane today and I enjoyed it. It was suspenseful and a thrilling, a lot better than I had expected. Not a great movie but a good one. It kept me interested and there were a few corny parts that I got a chuckle out of. I worked two shifts today because one of the other teachers had to take care of some immigration chizzy so I covered for her in the morning and I had my normal shift in the evening but there were a couple hours in between to blow so I ate some Chinese food and saw the movie. Then Karin and I went sopping at the new supermarket! OOOOH, exciting, not really. I was tired as hell. Oh-well.

We’ll see what’s up.

Sunday is Football Day!

Sunday is a Football day! I got up fairly early, showered and spend a lot of time going over my 6 Fantasy Football teams. Karin and I went to play Tennis at 11:00, right as the pregame shows were starting, so I really didn’t want to play, plus the amount on mucus in my nose and the cough I developed over night. But we played anyway. It was pretty fun, even though we lost a couple balls due to our inability to keep them in the court. The court here is on top of a building and if you hit the ball over any of the surrounding fences they usually end up in somebody’s back yard. We did manage to find two of them that were in the common areas, so we only lost three.

We got back about quarter to and I got to see some pregame. We got the NFL Sunday Ticket which is the coolest thing ever. We get to see every game as it is broadcast wither on FOX or CBS. So it is in English, with the same retarded horrible commentators, and we get to see the commercials. The commercials on TV here are always the same, every time they come in they are the same 4 or 5 so it is boring as hell. Now er get to see several different ones and comedic ones as well. The down side is that the products and shows that are being promoted, we are unable to use or see. The worst is the food commercials like Taco Bell and TGI Friday’s. Also the advertisements of the new TV shows that are on like the new Simpsons and Prison Break, that we won’t be able to see until God knows when. It’s kinda a tease but oh-well.

So I watched Football all day flipping through every game that was on and also to a channel where it had all the games on the screen at once and the NFL Network where they have radio broadcast of the games and constantly show all the up to minute stats in every category. Football was on the tube from 11:45am until the end of the Colts Giants game which ended maybe 9ish. Then, I watched highlight shows all night checking my fantasy teams. I am not doing very well by the way. I will probably win in at most 2 of the 6 leagues I am in. I just have to wait and see after the games tonight.

We’ll see what’s up.

Splittin' a Bottle with a Sibling!

I worked Saturday morning and I was busy. I was there for six hours and had a class every hour. It makes the time go by fast but sometimes I feel rushed and unprepared because I don’t have very much time to prepare before a class. I like to have an hour or so during the day to make sure everything in order. But it was cool, I had some cool classes.

On the way home I thought of a way to use the bottle of Absolute that has been in the fridge for some time and stopped at the little store next to our place to buy some grape juice. That’s right, grape juice. I have never tried it before but several people like to drink it here in Mexico and it is very popular. They didn’t have any large containers so I bought six small juice boxes. Karin wasn’t to keen on the idea of grape juice vodies but I wanted to try them.

We had no plans so we just chilled and watched the NFL network which had a college football highlight show on all day. It wasn’t until later when Karin asked me if I was going to make myself a drink so I made us some grape juice Vodies. I thought they were great and was putting them down. Karin didn’t really think they were all that and switched to Vodie Tonnies (Vodka Tonics) which I don’t care for at all. Next thing we knew, the bottle was gone. We watched a couple movies and what not, Rocky and Jurassic Park: The Lost World (which I spotted Vince Vaughn!) for example. It was a chill night splitting a bottle between siblings. Kyle and I know too much about that, we have split several a bottle of Jägermeíster over the years just to pass time, and then we would go out to the bar. I was wanting some more booze but there was none in the house. Which was good because I had a good buzz and I didn’t need anymore. Because then I would have too much and be sick the next day.

Then I moseyed on upstairs to jam to 80’s tunes and mess around on the computer.

B-Day party Friday

I went to a birthday party for a friend of mine, Monsi, she turned 21. It’s not as big of a deal as it is in the US because the legal age here is 18 and you can basically drink wherever because it isn’t really enforced. It was during the day and for whatever reason I didn’t have to work on Friday (this Friday as well ). It was at her mother’s house just up the road from out place. It was supposed to start at 3pm but since I had a short sleeping night due to my cold, I had an afternoon nap until about 3:30. I jumped on the bus, stopped at the liquor store to get her present, a Liter of Bacardi and some coke, and got to the house about 4:30. Good thing I didn’t show up at 3 because there wasn’t anybody there yet. I wasn’t worried about being late because that is how they do things here, Mexican time!

Keg of Corona

We had some good food of the grill (onions, chorizo, cecina, arranchera) and some bomb ass beans that had onion, peppers, and a couple other ingredients, it was good as hell. They actually had a keg there, Corona! The first time I have seen one at a party here. Their maid was pouring us some beers and it was foamy as hell. The maid’s way of trying to solve the foam problem was to keep pumping it up! I took over and tried to explain that there was too much pressure and to stop pumping. I had her get some pictures to pour the beer into and relieve some of the pressure. After a while it everything was all good.

I ate, had a couple beers, and was a little buzzed after a little while due to the medicine I was taking for my cold. But it was a weird buzz and it made me very uncomfortable. Karin came after work to have some food and we busted back home not to longer after that because we didn’t feel like going out for more and I had to work in the morning. We were home by 8pm.

Finally, Last Weekend in Michigan

Sorry for the delay but I caught a cold the last couple days and had no motivation to do anything really, let alone blog. I feel somewhat better today but I think that is just because I don’t have to work today and there is a birthday party to go to at 3:00pm.

Last weekend was my trip home. I left my pad in Toluca at 8am on Friday morning to catch the 9am bus to the airport in Mexico City. I left there at 1pm and didn’t leave the airport in Detroit until 10pm, and still had 2 hours to get to the final destination.

Ahhhhhh, but it was worth it. For the rest of the time until Sunday afternoon I was drunk. We had a lot of fun doing all sorts of drunk things; flippy cup, beer pong, skinny dippin’, singin’, dancin’, and fire jumping. The ladder I had an accident and burnt my thigh a little (not bad at all), twisted my ankle, and busted up my hand. Saturday night was the best. We had been drinking since the moment we got up waiting for the rest of the crew to come. There were only about 7 of us the first night, mostly everybody planned on coming for Saturday night. Saturday night was the 80’s Prom night. Mostly everybody was dressed in 80’s gear and we had 80’s tunes playing all night. It was basically a big drunk fest. Much like we used to do 5 years ago in our prime. It was a great crowd of about 25 people and everybody knew everybody. You can se all the pics at my photobucket under The Pond Labor Day Weekend. There are some crazy stupid ones and don’t be surprised to see a few without cloths!

I left on Sunday afternoon to go visit my parents that were camping at Sleepers State Park near Caseville in the thumb. There were still some people who were staying at the pond for another night. My body hurt and there was no way I could have handled it again. So Heidi (my taxi the whole weekend) headed out. Originally our plan was to stay the night there but I decided to head home that night to have an easy trip to the airport the next morning. But not after lunch, dinner, and hanging around the campfire.

It was an easy trip the next afternoon to the airport, I didn’t leave till 5 so we had some time. We ate lunch at Tony’s and got some HUGE sandwiches, like they always have. Got to the airport with a lot of time and headed out.

I had a short layover in Dallas, where my brother was spending the weekend, and I thought I might be able to catch him at the airport, but the problem was I didn’t know anything about his flight. When I got there I rushed to the TV’s where they have all the flight info and I saw that there was a plane to leave to Grand Rapids soon. I got there just before they were boarding… but no Kyle. Then I went to check out a couple flights to Chicago… but no Kyle. I thought for sure I could have hooked up with him even to say hi, but I didn’t. I got a little discouraged for a moment but then I just put some Sublime (our favorite band) on the ol’ iPOD and everything was cool.

I got back to Mexico City at about 11pm, too late to catch a bus so Karinski came to pick me up, and I got back to Toluca at about 12:30.

Since then just working and being sick.
We’ll see what’s up.
